This online sangha, facilitated by Guiding Teacher Konin Cardenas, will study and discuss "Living by Vow," the contemporary book by Shohaku Okumura Roshi on the meaning of eight pivotal Zen teachings. This is not a class, but a weekly discussion group over the summer. Participants will share in wide-ranging conversations about practice and teachings such as the bodhisattva vows, the Heart Sutra, the Sandokai, and the meaning of taking refuge in buddha, dharma and sangha.

Group discussions will take place online Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm Pacific US time, from June 12th to early September, with no meeting on June 19th. To register, email konin [at] ekanzenstudycenter.org and indicate your interest.

Each week the group will discuss one chapter or portion of a chapter from the text, with plenty of flexibility for taking up the topics of interest to those participating. The chapters may be discussed in this order:

week 1 - Prefaces and Introduction - June 12, 2018

week 2 - first half of chapter one: 4 bodhisattva vows

week 3 - second half of chapter one: 4 bodhisattva vows

week 4 - chapter two: the verse of repentance in its entirety

week 5 - chapter three: 3 refuges in its entirety (though this is an important topic and may take two meetings)

week 6 - chapter four: robe chant in its entirety

week 7 - first half of chapter five: meal chants

week 8 - second half of chapter five: meal chants

week 9 - first 25 pages or so of chapter six: heart sutra

week 10 - second 25 pages of chapter six: heart sutra

week 11 - last pages of chapter six: heart sutra

week 12 - first half of chapter seven: sandokai

week 13 - second half of chapter seven: sandokai

week 14 - chapter eight: sutra opening verse in its entirety

Like all Ekan Zen Study Center offerings, this discussion group is offered by donation. Participants can join via video conference or phone call, both using Zoom technology. The Zoom meeting ID number is 141 474 790
