Two-day Sesshin at Buddhist Insights: The One Who is Not Busy

This two-day retreat, led by Guiding Teacher Konin Cardenas, will be an exploration of the Zen teaching of "The One Who is Not Busy." It is a study of the inner and outer experience of stillness and activity. These aspects are all interwoven, inseparable, inescapable. Yet it is rare to take the time to deeply investigate this reality in our lives, to allow it to seep into our conscious experience. This sesshin, a two-day period of sitting and walking meditation, punctuated by chanting and meals, is an opportunity to study the one who is not busy, to experience this one.

Please join us and give yourself and the world the gift of turning the light inward to illuminate the true self. Only you can give yourself this gift. Only you can offer the benefits it brings to all beings.

Awakening to the Zen of This Very Life: a Workshop

One of the fundamental teachings of Zen is that awakening can only be found right in the midst of one's everyday life. Yet one might wonder whether that teaching is still true in the midst of a modern life that seems pushed and pulled by so many pressures, so many activites. This workshop will explore the Zen teachings on how to discover that the absolute and the relative co-exist peacefully right here, in this body and mind. The key is inquiry, which we will begin during our time together. The day will include a discussion of excerpts from Eihei Dogen Zenji's "Instructions to the Head Cook" and a koan from Sekkei Harada Roshi's "Unfathomable Depths: Drawing Wisdom for Today from a Classical Zen Poem." No previous Zen practice is necessary in order to benefit from this workshop.

The workshop will take place at the American Buddhist Study Center, 331 Riverside Dr, New York, NY 10025. Call them at (212) 864-7424 to register.

Sitting for Rohatsu

Because the Buddha sat in such an unwavering way in the week leading up to his enlightenment, we too will sit, abiding in awakened nature.

December 8th is the day on which Soto Zen traditionally celebrates the Buddha's enlightenment. In Japanese it is referred to as "Rohatsu," which means the eight day of the 12th lunar month.

Join Konin for a period of informal sitting at Empty Hand Zen Center, 45 Lawton Street, New Rochelle, NY. Everyone is welcome!
